Some people make music by typing.

They use Strudel, a free tool for making music with code, and write it line by line while it plays. HyperJam does the typing for you. You just talk.

Questions people ask

What is HyperJam?
An iPhone app for making music without playing an instrument. Say what you want to hear, like “a rainy-night beat”, and HyperJam makes it. Say “make it jazzier” and it changes while it plays. Then play along on sixteen keys that can’t hit a wrong note.
Do I need to know music or code?
No. You describe the music in your own words, out loud or by typing, and HyperJam writes it. You never have to read the code, pick a chord or know what key you’re in.
What is Strudel?
Strudel is a free, open-source tool for making music by typing code. HyperJam writes every track in Strudel, so each one is a few lines of plain code you can read, copy and play at strudel.cc.
How do I get HyperJam?
HyperJam is in beta on iPhone. You install it through TestFlight, Apple’s app for trying apps before they’re in the App Store. Tap “Get HyperJam free on iPhone” on this page to join.
Is it free?
Yes. The beta is free. You can play as a guest; making your own tracks needs a free account.
Can I use a track’s code somewhere else?
You can play it, learn from it and remix it. Copy the code from any track and paste it into strudel.cc and it plays there too. If you want to release a remix of a track from HyperJam outside the app, ask us first.
How do the keys stay in key?
The sixteen keys only hold notes from the track’s key, laid out so each step to the right goes up one note of the scale. There’s nothing wrong to hit, so any key you tap, in any order, fits the music.
